I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget about what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
(Maya Angelou - 1928-2018)
I have several years' experience of working with social work leaders from aspiring and new managers to directors and CEOs in both children’s and adults’ services.
I have worked with a range of local authorities, trusts, teaching partnerships, charities and voluntary sector organisations in social work, social care, health and education.
At the heart of good reflective leadership lies self-awareness, a willingness to learn and adapt, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
This involves leaders taking time to build trusting relationships through an empathic and compassionate approach, to analyse their actions, and the impact on others.
What I help with
I have significant practice and research knowledge and expertise about reflective supervision and leadership in social work, which is also transferable to other aligned professions.
I have developed bespoke programmes ranging for a series of 90 minute workshops to a full 6 day reflective supervision and leadership programme. I also provide reflective group spaces for practitioners and managers to think about their work together.
I undertake much of my work on my own and some of the full programmes are delivered alongside an experienced co-facilitator. I am open to delivering sessions in-person and have also developed a robust pedagogical approach to online teaching and learning which has had excellent feedback from participants.
My key areas of expertise
The ethos of my work is based on the Tavistock work discussion method of teaching and learning which provides participants with a reflective space to learn by experience. I draw on the key theoretical concepts of systems psychodynamics, relationship-based and trauma-informed practice to help practitioners to think about their work.
This also includes sharing a range of up to date research and theoretical models to provide a framework for the learning.
What people learn in the sessions
The sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to:
• Have acquired the knowledge, skills, and values required to take up the role of practice supervisor/leader, in keeping with the key Post Qualifying-Knowledge and Skills requirements for social work.
• Have the confidence to deploy a range of research and theoretically informed approaches to help supervisees with emotionally and professionally complex dilemmas and decision-making processes, keeping the needs of people who use services clearly in mind.
• Have developed a deeper and wide ranging set of critically self-reflective capacities and skills, enabling them to remain focused, analytical, authoritative, ethical and professional in demanding professional and supervisory circumstances.
• Have a critical understanding and ability to work constructively and reflectively with the dynamics of power, authority, emotion, difference, diversity, equity and inclusion in practice situations, and in the supervisory relationship, recognising the role of clear contracting processes with supervisees, the significance of professional anxiety on all involved and the importance of effectively managing its emotional impact.
• Appreciate and work in a critically constructive manner with the impact of organisational pressures on themselves and their supervisees and how these may at times create tension with professional ethical principles, within hybrid working contexts.
How we'll work together
I offer a free 30 minute consultation for us to meet and to hear what you need. We can then decide if I can provide what's needed, and we can discuss our expectations and a working agreement.
I will then send you a proposed contract agreement for the work which sets out my terms and conditions and proposed costs.

Initially as a Black female practitioner I was quite defensive regarding the workshops on offer, as I have had a plethora of supervision training over my 30 years in children’s social care. I am 60 years old and was about to hand in my notice, as I had had enough.
The shift in my stance soon became apparent to me as I began to relax, absorb and enjoy the workshops and the way in which they were delivered by the amazing facilitators. By day 5, I felt like all my 30 years in the job made sense!!
The sessions with Jo and Gillian [co-facilitator] gave me the opportunity to look deep within myself and remember why I chose a career in Social Work all those years ago. The precious time spent with my colleagues, was an inspirational period of reflection that I will never forget. I am grateful to have been given the chance to look back in order for me as a team manager and as a human being to move forward.
I really valued these training sessions. I appreciate the space you have created, and you make everyone feel so at ease.
It has been an opportunity to connect, reflect and learn together, as a facilitator you have been amazing.
Thank you
