Reflective practice is the royal road to innovation and improving care for those we serve.
(Michael West - 2020)
Reflective practice groups contribute beyond individual reflection by supporting relationship-based practice, team functioning and organisational learning.
The aims of creating a reflective group for either supervision or coaching are to generate a space for peers to connect and learn together.
The focus is on practice and developing the thinking by utilising the intellectual, imaginative and emotional resources of the group. This can serve to open up new perspective and new ways of thinking about challenges and dilemmas.
It can also result more generally in the longer-term outcomes affecting quality of practice, practitioner wellbeing, team resilience and organisational culture.
The organisations I have collaborated with
I have worked with a range of local authorities, Trusts, teaching partnerships, charities and voluntary sector organisations in social work, social care, health and education sectors across England and Wales.
What I can help
Alongside my significant practice and research knowledge and expertise about reflective supervision and leadership in social work, I also have over 15 years experience of facilitating reflective group spaces.
I have provided these spaces for social work practitioners, residential workers, nurses, teachers, multi-disciplinary groups, management teams, senior leaders and more recently groups of lead child protection practitioners within the newly formed Families First Partnerships.
I can provide anything from a one off 90 minute reflective session to help a group to process a particular incident or dilemma to a programme of regular groups to think about practice more generally. The sessions work well either in person or online and many organisations commission a hybrid model whereby we so some of each.
I am open to being creative with technology and working with what the group and organisation need.
My approach to facilitating
The ethos of my work is based on the Tavistock work discussion method of teaching and learning. This provides participants with a reflective space to learn by experience.
I draw on the key theoretical concepts of systems psychodynamics, relationship-based and trauma-informed practice to help practitioners to think about their work.
What people learn in the sessions
The sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to:
• Develop reflective skills through critical analysis of cases, linking experience to theory and ethics to inform future actions.
• Develop ethical judgment and risk awareness from multiple perspectives, and plan safer, evidence-informed interventions.
• Enhance professional wellbeing through peer support, bearing witness to the challenges of practice and building team resilience.
• Build collaborative skills and peer learning which embrace diverse perspectives and create consistency within the team approach.

Jo has provided an invaluable and much needed space to our Multi Agency Child Protection Team to support practitioners to do their best work in a challenging space.
Jo’s knowledgeable, insightful and kind approach has helped to create a safe reflective supervision environment which has hugely benefitted the team as we have developed.
Lead Child Protection Practitioners are faced with complex, emotionally demanding and high pressured decision making on a daily basis and the reflective spaces led by Jo have allowed them to think about the impact of the work, develop a strong team culture of support and put relationship based practice at the heart of safeguarding.
Thank you for creating such a safe, warm and informative environment for us to learn and develop.
I have looked forward to each session. You make us feel like we are doing something useful and are appreciated.
Your kindness and support has been invaluable and your energy is incredibly special.
How we will work together
I offer a free 30 minute consultation for us to meet and to hear what you need. We can then decide if I can provide this, and we can discuss our expectations and a working agreement. I will then send you a proposed contract agreement for the work which sets out my terms and conditions and proposed costs.
My fees for consultation
My starting fee is £130 per hour and is dependent on the type and volume of work required. For example, a full programme will cost a lower hourly rate than a one-off reflective session.

My cancellation policy for leadership development
In the event that the work is unable to go ahead once the contract is agreed, the cancellation policy is as follows:
(i) If, for whatever reason, the organisation finds it necessary to postpone or cancel the work which has been agreed, they will not be liable for the cost if 30 working days or more notice is given, except when preparation work has already taken place which will be charged for in full.
(ii) If 15-29 working days notice is given, the organisation will be liable for 40% of the cost.
(iii) If 7 to 14 working days’ notice is given, the organisation will be liable for 70% of the cost.
(iv) If cancellation is within less than 7 working days the organisation will be liable for the whole cost of the work.
